In this body of work, Chan Alvarez  draws on Søren Kierkegaard’s philosophy of the self as a relation that relates to itself – a paradoxical synthesis of opposites that captures a self in crisis: not yet whole, fractured by loss, and disconnected from its true nature.

Each figure relegates the subjectivity of the self to abstract objectivity. His visual narrative of blankness allows liberation from the constraints of representation. It is an expression of an inner world – connected and disconnected all at once.
